A TV show that might seem a little close to the bone

Post by Robo »

This series just started screening on the Syfy Channel, the first episode headlines with a pretty large star wars collection. Not sure I like all the emotion and schmaltz that the US tends to add, but anyway, take a look.

I haven't found a torrent or anything for it, but you can watch it from NZ, which is something.

This is why you need to be selective with your collecting and don't just buy everything just because it's got STAR WARS on the packaging.

Haven't finished watching it yet, but $150k US seems like a lot to spend in 6 years. Some real tack in there alongside some cool stuff. Have to say I think I would prefer to see some home made/custom things in amongst the purchased stuff. Like I think Matt's Han in Carbonite just feels better than something they bought. The memories associated with some items can be pretty special.

Okay, finished it now. Not sure I want my wife to see this show. Some valuable lessons there, like don't leave your rare delicate stuff in a damp garage. But in some ways I think a show where someone forces collectors to sell their stuff is a little bit like a snuff movie. I get that you can get excessive, arguably any collection is probably unnecessary, but it seems very wrong and disturbing on some level, to make people sell their stuff like that (especially at mark down prices to comic stores).
Interesting seeing Steve Sansweet and Rancho Obi-wan at the end.

I took it as a reminder to stay focused if you're a collector. No matter how hard you try you'll never able to buy/ store/ display everything you may want so best to stick to what really matters to you. I've been sorely tempted to start collecting 1:1 scale helmets but where would it end?

There's a lot to be said for focus and a rational approach. I've been guilty of forgetting that I've had a particular item in my collection from time to time, but at least I've retained the capacity to sell off surplus or less-favoured pieces occasionally.

Not really sure about the therapeutic benefit in the way they undertook that...it didn't look like they really even made a dent in that Star Wars collection, considering they said they grossed $5.5k (I think?), but some of the items were in the $700-1000 range.

I know, the $5500 seemed way short seeing they sold a life size Rex for over $2k. It would have barely been a dent. I am guessing that this is reality TV and the participants are compensated. I think there is no way most of us would let some crazy tv person come and tell us what we do is wrong and deciding what we should unload.
It is torrentable now:

The show really got to me. I have to make a note to check out next week's one. I have only one catwoman figure so at least half this show didn't feel quite so close to home.

They made reference to a valuable GI Joe figure though, didn't they? ...didn't stir some drive to hit eBay at all?
