Costuming resources and sources in NZ

Post by MattG »

A few people have suggested/asked for a thread to discuss sources of materials for Star Wars (or other) costuming/prop making that are available locally (or good online sources if they are better/cheaper than local stores). Please feel free to add in links and details of products or items you have found useful in your projects.

Rob - this first one's for you.

You can get Rub'N'Buff from many art supplies stores, but I found it convenient to order online from Takapuna Art Supplies http://www.tasart.co.nz/shop/hobby-craf ... n-buff15ml

It was Silver Leaf that I used on these styrene blades.

Rivets!:
Grut Distributers
http://www.gdltradingnz.co.nz/
Bifurcated or two part, many sizes and lengths. If anyone needs someone to go halvsies I'm interested in more silver tones two parters :)
What I used on my Sith armour was a double cap (so in theory same on both sides but it depends on how you smack 'em together.
Also lots of hardware. Studs and more.

More rivets and all sorts of leather work:

http://www.lapco.co.nz/Product/Service/ ... roduct/138
Double cap rivets as an eg. but heaps of fasteners including lacing hooks etc.

I bought dye and a buckle from their ChCh store and they were great.

Sheet plastic (styrene, sintra, perspex etc) is available from a number of sources (have used Modern Plastics, Mulford International, and a few local signmakers/vac-formers to get it in the past), but my current recommendation is Cambrian Plastics, in Henderson, who made the custom perspex dome I used for my vintage Death Star at Armageddon.

Anyone putting armour together would probably find this helpful, more-tex fastening tape or velcro.
This can come in rolls of 25 meters in 25mm width in almost any colour you could ask for as long as it's black or white, it can also have an adhesive backing or not.
These sold for $7.50 + gst per roll of either hook or loop from Canvasland in Levin, great place for fabrics as well.

I also found two part epoxy glue 24ml for $2.40 per tube at Pete's emporium in Porirua normally the selleys sell for $14-18.00 a tube.
Doomsday and Armageddon got together and had a baby and man is it ugly.

That's useful (have you found it to be good stuff?) It's the sort of hidden cost (along with spray paint, I find) that really adds up quick.

Yes it's just as good as the branded products, probably made in the same factory.

Hi all -

Here are some locally sourced items for the TK's out there:

Image

Green Lighting Gel for Lenses:
After having a hard time finding suitable welders masks in NZ & at a reasonable price - I found that the hardcore UK Garrison guys had been using Green Lighting Gel. I found plenty of that available locally and bought some off Surplustronics for $3.50 a sheet http://www.surplustronics.co.nz/product ... -gel-sheet. One sheet is enough to do two helmets at least. Its sturdy but easily bent/dinged but looks the part. I havent tested them in trooping conditions but for that price its worth a try.

Image

Rubber Brow Trim:
At $7.49 a metre its a pretty good deal for a very accurate brow trim: http://www.pararubber.co.nz/product.php?id_product=468. Ive yet to find a good source of S Channel Stripping locally so this can double as a good neck trim also. I bought 2m but but 1m should be enough to cover one helmet depending on the neck hole but play it safe and get 2m.

Ear Screws:
For ear screws I found some great brass screws from my local Hammer Hardware - cheap and accurate to boot.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Yay! Thank you so much for the post about the gel - just ordered some after many fruitful searches for engineer's face plates, etc. Brilliant!

Even ordered some red gel for my Red Guard helmet I'm building.

Thanks again! Phil
