Not sure I remember the bit about GI Joe. I was quite interested in some of the Mego figures of the 12 inch variety, if I am honest, and the Six Million Dollar Man stuff. I couldn't believe it when he took like $600 for all that stuff at the comic store.
I think that a wife making you sell your collection for way less than it is worth (or even for more, thinking about it) should be grounds for divorce. Mind you, that guy hid it all from his wife until after they were married, and he was financially crippling them with his spending, which is pretty bad.

seen this?

kind of a similar thing.

The SW collections that I've seen here in AKL (you know who you are!) are great, they are all focused and have a coherency about them and show a real dedication but without the hoarder/ madness aspect that seems to plague the collector :D.

ha ha it's like hoarding is the darkside of collectiing........ :emperor:

Hoarding is just the term used by people to describe a collection when they don't understand why you're collecting it. :)

Found another TV show that could be interesting.
Called Toy Hunter, there are some torrents out there here:

http://thepiratebay.se/search/toy%20hunter/0/99/200

He finds a prototype rocket firing bobafett, a ride on childs speeder bike, and plenty of other items, including a ton of vintage non-star wars pieces. He's almost as much of a knob-end as the crocodile hunter but his visit to the heart of Kenner country and one of the product designers is interesting. Just ignore some of the reality show fluff around the edges.

Edit - just realised the youtube link above is to this show. Duh, sorry.

Really enjoying both shows. I watched the first 3 episodes of the intervetion one, and some toy hunter a couple nights ago.
Good entertainment in my book, and yeah I must say the intervention one has got me thinking ever so slightly about the direction of my collection. ;)

Haven't watched ToyHunter yet, but I thought Intervention was fun. It never hurts to reassess the motivation and ultimate aim behind one's collection. I'm doing a bit of that myself right now as I try to fit it all my stuff that has been stuffed in the cupboards into our new space and figure out how it will be displayed. Basically the rule is going to be, if it ain't on display it's going to have to go. I don't want to just have a big stack of toys or overcrammed shelves, so displaying it artfully in a way that it can be appreciated, with focal items and supporting pieces, is important. It's like designing an exhibition.

It has also made me question why I have certain items and what the goal is. For example, I collected a bunch of the old micro machines and various other miniatures spacecraft over the years. For a while that was motivated by my plan to use them for tabletop gaming purposes, but as that never really eventuated the way I hoped, I am left with an impressive but kind of pointless collection. I like them and don't want to get rid of them, so I have been thinking about displaying them in cases on acrylic stands - something I saw done to great effect at Matt and Kristy's place (credit where it is due). But, that means I don't need an entire fleet of TIEs or X-Wings, so I have started trimming all the doubles out of my collection.

As I have both Micro Machines and other minis, there is also considerable overlap in the collections. I've been asking myself whether I really need both? The conclusion I have come to is that I don't, but I also don't want to get rid of ships in one that I don't have analogs of in the other, so I am rolling them together, picking the best representation of any one starship design and getting rid of the others. Neither collection was complete to begin with and some of those rare pieces out there that would make them complete collectiosn are way out of my price range, so losing some isn't really a big deal. At first I was feeling pretty awful about letting some of this stuff go. Some of it was hard to get in the first place, but if it's surplus to my collection display needs then why have it, right? It's also meant now I can formulate a realistic checklist of what other pieces I might want to pick up with a newfound focus and clear picture of what I need and why.

So, I'm trimming and honing again and it's a rollercoaster of feeling good about freeing myself of some of my crap, while at the same time it's a lurch to let some things go and give up on the dream of displaying said piece. I can relate to a number of the people in these shows, though fortunately I'm not as attached to the hoard as perhaps some of these extreme cases are.

That was a really long winded way of saying reassessing one's reason for collecting and ultimate collecting goals is a healthy and occassionally profitable thing to do! :D

Dude.
What he said.
You are right, and put it quite well. I know there is stuff that isn't "core business" and I should just man up and ditch it. But selling 4 inch POTF figures by the kilo just totally turned me off so I bagged them and stored them. Where I can get a halfway decent price, I am quite happy to sell them.

I really like the action fleet vehicles, but they have been stored for 4 years now, so I am going to have to make some decisions on them I think. And 4 inch vehicles. And 4 inch beasts. Oh god.

I feel your pain. I think maybe we have the makings of a support group forming here. :D
