Reverend Strone's customs

Post by Reverend Strone »

It has been a while since I had the chance to do any, but every now and again I do a burst of customising. Since some folks have asked to see them, here are some images of some past customs. Enjoy! :)

Dice Ibegon
Just prior to Hasbro coming out with a Dice Ibegon toy I had sculpted one of my own. I'll be honest, even though she's an unarticulated statue, essentially, I kinda like mine better than the design they came up with in this instance so I will likley use this one when I build my cantina dio.

Image

BD-J38
This guy is nearly a decade old and has since been superceded by a really cool Hasbro BAD version, but I'll share him nonetheless for fun. It was an 8D8 body with a newly sculpted head.

Image

Mos Eisley Backgrounder
Plenty of dudes just wandering around in the background in the movies so i needed some human backgrounders for a dio. An Ep 1 preview Mace Windu was the base figure in this case and he turned out quite well I thought.

Image

Goldie (R3-S6)
The astro droid turned spy from The Clone Wars. This is my realistic interpretation of the CW character.

Image
Image

Reegesk
This was one of my very first customs, back in 1997 or 98 I think, cantina denizen Reegesk, made by sculpting onto a POTF2 Jawa.

Black Rebel Astro Droid (Yavin IV Briefing Room)

Red Clone Wars Microseries R5 Droid and White R4 (Coruscant V-19 Staging Area)
While I stuck close to the red R5 design seen in the show, the white R4 looked kinda dull just plain white and grey, so assuming that the Microseries design might represent a simplified version of a realistic droid, I reverse engineered him and had some fun adding made-up black trim lines in the spirit of one of the orange R4s seen in the background in AOTC.

Q7 Astro Droids
In the Incredible Crossections book it describes V-Wings as being co-piloted by special spherical Q-7 astro droid units. I love the idea of that and customed up a pair - both a red one and an imperial black version. They use the bottom half of an IT-0 Interrogation droid and stand with the top half of an R2 unit. This was before the BADs came along, which would have made it a much easier task! My only regret is I didn't shave enough off the domes before sticking them together, so they ended up kinda oval instead of spherical. Oh well.

The red one graces my avatar.

Droids Series Q5 Astro Droid
I was thinking that while we have seen a number of dome styles on astro droids, the galaxy is a big place and there must be many more out there than those we have seen on screen in the movies. I was looking in my box of parts and came across a vintage FX-7 toy that was pretty beat up. I always loved the head on that thing and thought it would make a great custom astro droid dome, perhaps of some new type? I sliced it off and added some extra details and gribblies to get this design.

A short while after I completed it i came across a youtube video of the classic Droids episode The Great Heep, which is full to bursting with bizarre new astro droid types and I almost fell off my chair when amongst them I spotted a background orange droid that looked almost exactly like what I had just customised. I promptly retroactively designated my custom droid as this guy and made up the model designation Q5.

Waiter Droid
In the Heir to the Empire comic adaptation there is a really cool background droid that waits on Lando and Han. I love the design and customed one of my own based on this image.

Shasa Tiel
Another old custom, but it still holds up and has yet to be superceded by a proper one from Hasbro - here's Jabba's Ishi-Tib, made cutting and gluing a POTF-2 Ponda Baba and an Ishi-Tib together.

Image

RA-7
I tried a repaint of the recent BAD RA-7 figure to try and get it looking more silver. It was marginally successful.

Thanks for looking. I will post more when I get time. :)

Awesome stuff. I love the obscure and unique characters, like the 'Droids' series Q5.

Thank you guys. :) Here are a couple more.

Imperial Protocol Droid
Okay, so we never saw this guy in the movies of media, but I figure if the Empire likes glossy black astro droids then they probably have some glossy black protocol droids stashed away somewhere. This guy will live in my Death Star diorama some day when it's done.

Image

MD Droid
In one of the older versions of the essential Guide to Droids there was a medical droid based on early McQuarrie concept art that was a little different than the final 2-1B we saw in the films. I thought he'd be a fun droid to custom, and this was another one I did way back in like 1998 or something using the old POTF-2 2-1B. I'd love to update him some day using the new figure.

I like this unit, maybe like the sideshow bust of C3po and the prototype K3po this would be a good one to do. :)
