Display Case Thread

Post by Zippo »

So, last week three model ship display cases arrived from Hong Kong. Their mission - to display my growing 3 3/4 inch action figure collection.
I had tried using some business card holders in the past (see http://www.tfnzboard.transformersnewzea ... 04#p142304) but wasnt happy with them.

As I had less Star Wars figures, I tried starting with them and this is the result

Again, not 100% happy, but its more to do with my requirement to use bluetak to hold up the figures in the display stand while I search for display stands.
I also have an issue with the case - there are two clips on the clear plastic that hook into the black base. On all three one of these clips refuses to let go without a massive fight and so changing the figures inside is going to be rather hard.

They look great...and a useful idea for a thread.

Do you mind sharing how much they cost? Is it possible to maybe carefully file off the catches that make them difficult to open?

Re-quote as I had the same question. We often get customers asking about display cases and it's an accessory line I have considered for the shop, as they're not easy to come by in NZ.

Cool case! I'd love to know how much they were too.
I have some figure stands coming very soon and will possibly have some extra if you're interested.

That looks great ... although I'd need about 100 cases that size and a much bigger room to put them in.

I'm not sure I'd use Blutack though. Supposedly it's non-reactive, but it does often leave marks on paper, wallpaper, etc. and can rip paint and wallpaper off walls if it hardens. You might be better off getting some proper figure stands - I've seen them in black and clear - they are a bit expensive, but you could use Blutack under those without potentially ruining your figures.

You could probably get cases made by a company that makes acrylic / perspex boxes, brochure stands, etc., but again they'd be expensive. (A quick Goolge search turns up Display Tactix in Auckland, Wellington and Christhurch, but there are many others.) Those who have made things like their own armour could make their own display cases as well ... although cutting up acrylic / perspex sheets and gluing them is a messy and stinky job. Glass cases would cost much more.

If you have lots of (spare time and money), you could also put printed backdrops on the back and side walls and build up the space inside with trees or whatever to create great dioramas. Places selling model trains might be a good place to find useful items for doing that.

The Apple laptop in the background along with the Star Wars figures proves you're a person of great taste and superior intelligence. :)

$27NZ each for the case + around $35 for shipping as they came from Hong Kong. Cost me just under $150 for the three that I purchased.

I did email the store about one of the cases as one of those latches was broken. But after dealing with the other two perfectly fine case, I will definatly be doing some sanding or even breaking to remove the latches (Just means in future I couldn't lift up the case without being that extra bit more careful)

I am looking into display stands for the figures - the bluetak just isn't working as already Boba and Dengar are leaning back ever so slighly and I delayed setting up any of my other cases as well - some of the figures I note dont come withy peg holes. Meangreen pointed me to Biby Co in Australia for packs of display stands that fit modern Star Wars, Joes and Marvel Universe figures - just trying to see if I can get some cheaper and maybe smaller as having the display stands will limit the number of figures I can fit in the case.

Oh and the Mac isn't mine.. I use a Windows 7 Desktop

The EntertainmentEarth webstore sells figure stands. No doubt other webstores like Brian's Toys also sell them. I have never bought anything from either of these two, but I know they have been around for many years.

I realised this morning that I've got some figure stands I don't use - they came with a TradeMe purchase a few years ago. From memory I think there's about a dozen round, black plastic stands if you want them ... I've no idea which box in the cupboard they're in though, so would take me a while to find them (no doubt they'll be in the very last box I look in, as usual).

Oh dear, that means there's only the Star Wars figures raising you to the levels of "OK-ish taste" and "average intelligence". ;)

For lightsabers, I've used a standard model car (I guess 1:18 scale) display case, available from many hobby stores...it's about the right size for single items like this.
