He's not writing the story, and it sounds like his personal fandom may spoil Star Wars somewhat for him, while being good for the rest of us.
Generally it seems to me that he has a good record of putting good story's down onto film, so I'll choose to be positive about the outcome.

He does?!? Let me know what parallel universe that is and how I can move there.
Felicity ... well, umm, yawn!
Alias started off okay, but became an incomprehensible mess made up as he went along.
Lost started off okay, but became an incomprehensible mess made up as he went along.
Star Trek (so called) movie simply made a complete mess of the existing franchise.
Fringe started of an incomprehensbile mess and didn't change.
Alcatraz started off okay-ish, but got silly and was cancelled.
Cloverfield was over-hyped rubbish - they couldn't even give it away on DVD.
and the list goes on.

Good to see you putting your argument through buzz.
I personally dont know what to think about the director. Im not a star trek fan but did enjoy the recent revamped version of it. I guess we will see the outcome soon enough.
To me if the movie is a hit or a flop i will still be out hunting for the latest in merchandise to add to the man cave.

Edit:
Hard work
The universe where if the writing/story is good, I'd back him to direct it well.

Although I never liked Lost, I personally though Fringe was probably one of the best Sci-Fi's I've seen in a long time and that John Noble's portrayal of Walter Bishop was excellent.
I was happy with the ending too

Yeah I thought the new star trek was great, looking forward to the sequel. In a way it was alot more Star Warsy in feel and pace than the newer SW were.

I'm still waiting for something a little more official before I get too committed either way, but, although he may not have been top of my list, I reckon JJ's addition to the existing team could make for perfectly good Star Wars.
