The Walt Disney Company announced on Tuesday that it is purchasing Lucasfilm in a stock and cash purchase valued at $4.05 billion. The deal includes plans for Star Wars: Episode VII, aiming for release in 2015. Walt Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced in a shareholder conference call that the studio also plans to release Episode VIII and Episode IX, adding, “Our longterm plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

The deal also includes George Lucas’ companies like Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Star Wars creator and Lucasfilm CEO George Lucas in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

Veteran producer Kathleen Kennedy, who recently became co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the studio’s president, reporting to Disney studios chairman Alan Horn. She will executive produce the future Star Wars films, with Lucas serving as a creative consultant.

The deal also includes plans to incorporate Star Wars into Disney’s TV, parks, and games businesses.

Yep, I had to double-check the calendar to make sure it wasn't 1 April. A rushed and botched job "Episode 7" that ruins the story of Darth Vader Saga. Looks like the talentless over-egoed money-grubbers are moving in to destroy another franchise. I was hoping that wouldn't happen until well after George Lucas and I were both dead. A very sad, sad day.

To quote Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker: "NNnnnnnnnooooooooooo...!!! ":(

The only tiny plus point is that LucasFilm, ILM, etc. are back together with Pixar.

On a semi-related note, Pearson (the parent company who own Penguin Books among others) has just bought Random House, the publisher who does the UK versions of the Star Wars novels ... not sure if this is good news or not, but since the novels seem to have disappeared from local shop shelves, may it will mean they return.

Yup, also "plans to release Episode VIII and Episode IX, adding, “Our longterm plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

To me, this isn't surprising. It wasn't that long ago that Lucas announced his retirement - now he has $4.05 billion to do so. He is staying as creative consultant though, so not out completely. Kathleen Kennedy is taking over as Lucasfilm president, so it's not a outsider taking over.

Will be interesting to see what the proposed new films will be about etc. Fans have been asking for a live-action tv show for years, I would think people would be cautiously optimistic about new films? Disney owns Marvel, and The Avengers film didn't suffer for it.
