Saw these just recently (and a second, 'Sith' one)...had seen them online, but not in real life - they are aimed at kids, but are actually quite cool little reference books (if just a shade more lightweight than the other DK reference offerings).

Yep, Beware the Sith. I posted that one about three weeks ago. :)

They are good books with great images and some good snippets of information, but being aimed at kids, they are a bit simplistic and suffer from short paragraphs lacking much detail for the hard core / adult Star Wars fan.

According the list of past and near future kids' Star Wars books I was given late last year, there are four books in the series (so far, the list does have any more) with the first two released a year ago, but I don't recall seeing those in shops here. Here's the blurbs:
Star Wars: Beware the Sith (Release: 27 February, 2012)
$21 - 96 pages
"Fear is the path to the Dark Side." Listen to Yoda.
More than just a book, Star Wars: Beware the Sith is a vital guide that no budding Star Wars fan should be without! Uncover all the secrets of the Dark Side of the Force, learn all about the most fearsome Sith Lords of all time, and most important of all, how to protect yourself against them. Filled with amazing images and in a handy compact format, Star Wars: Beware the Sith is on out-of-this-universe read, perfect for every Star Wars loving child.

Star Wars: The Secret Life of Droids (Release: 22 February, 2012)
$21 - 96 pages
Become part of the action and uncover the mysteries of the droids.
This is more than just a book, your child will love the insight into Star Wars: The Secret Life of Droids. Watch as your child discovers exactly what it's like to be a droid and uncovers all the technology, functions, and most interesting of all, their different personalities. Filled with amazing images and in a handy compact format, Star Wars: The Secret Life of Droids is on out-of-this-universe read, perfect for every Star Wars fan.

Star Wars: Battle for the Galaxy (Release: 28 February, 2011)

Don't just read about the Star Wars universe, become a part of the action yourself with this new Star Wars series! Star Wars: Battle for the Galaxy shows off the hottest Republic-era technology. Star Wars: Mysteries of the Jedi (Release: 28 February, 2011)
$21 - 96 pages

It looks like Whitcoulls may be getting back on track. They got those new Dorling Kindersley kids books, and today I found a few paperback copies of Star Wars: Red Harvest in the ex-Borders branch in Albany (Auckland) ... even better it was only $19.99 rather than the $25 previous paperbacks have been. (There werre no copies in the older Whitcoulls Albany branch.)

Star Wars: Red Harvest (Paperback, $19.99)
by Joe Schrieber
255 pages
+ 14 pages excerpt from "Star Wars: Scourge"
+ 17 page "State of the Galaxy" (reminders of the characters and situation in the Fate of the Jedi series)
+ 12 pages excerpt from "Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi - Outcast"

Managed to score this bad boy yesterday:

Was on my way to Retrospace and stopped in at a local second hand bookstore for a quick nosy. $65 later... :woot:

Also, I was strolling up Queen St yesterday and they had a small Whitcoulls Clearance store open with a few of the Legacy of the Force books for $5 each.

While looking for new items today, I found a new book at both branches of Whitcoulls in Albany (North Shore, Auckland). Star Wars Folded Flyers published by Klutz and priced at $25 in the Kids' Colouring / Activity Books section. The book contains printed pages that can be cut-out and folded, and in some cases glued, to make 30 different paper starfighters which look like they can by thrown to "fly" like a paper airplane. The book also contains a few other small bits of text like "information from pilots".

Dymocks in Newmarket (Auckland) have got one copy of the new 2012 version of Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide from Dorling Kindersley, priced at $45. It's been updated with a few new bits of information (I'm not sure what, but I did see a brief paragraph about the recently released Fighter Pods) and has a red-and-black Vader's mask cover design.

The latest Whitcoulls junk mail catalogue is advertising the cartoon book Darth Vader & Son (which MattG posted about here):
Darth Vader & Son
Jeffrey Brown
Darth Vader is a Dad like any other - sharing life lessons with Luke, with that special bond between father and son. Touching - and simply hilarious!
$24.99

An advert in yesterday's NZ Herald (Canvas magazine section) for the Living & Giving stores says they also have the Darth Vader & Son book, but priced $3 more at $27.99 in their Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and online stores.
