RIP Ralph McQuarrie

Post by MattG »

Very sad to hear of the passing of Ralph McQuarrie - conceptual artist and design consultant on the Original Trilogy, his contributions to Star Wars and other iconic sci-fi movies (including Battlestar Galactica, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind) will not be forgotten.

My earliest memories of his art and Star Wars designs are of his pre-production pieces used in the R2 Space Ice stickers of 1977. The imagery of a couple of his paintings, in particular, on those stickers hold very strong memories for me.

Remember gazing at his art/images from the tip top stockers for hours as a kid. Very sad news.

Im sure his inspiring work has had a positive effect on many generations of fans. In many ways, we as fans are in turn the byproduct of his work :)

I've heard George credit Ralph's work as one of the main reasons the first Star Wars even made it into production. If that's true then we have an enormous amount to thank him for.

This pic is going around some internet channels. It's Ralph's ESB cameo...with sketchbook in hand and his Echo Base matte painting in the background.

Man, I owe my career to the inspiration this great man gave us with his designs. He is survived by one heck of a legacy. What a legend.

So sad to hear of his passing, but he had not been well for some time. I hope it was peaceful in the end and in the company of those who knew and loved him dearest of all.

Mike Pangrazio also makes a cameo in that shot!
