Overall I like the effects you can get from 3d but the glasses are a pain in the pawa culka! (huttese)
I'm only aware of the kind that requires glasses as far as cinema 3D goes (of which there are a few different types), though there are other tv versions either out or in development. i haven't been following that tech to see where it's at yet.

The new movies will (almost certainly) be shot in 3D and get a 3D release ... hopefully that does not mean idiotic 3D gimmickry (lightsabers pushed "out" of the screen) and even more hopefully they still realease a porper, normal, 2D version as well.
You and me both Buzz. :) That stuff gets really old, really fast. I am not too worried about that though. JJ doesn't seem like he'd go in for that. I figure he'd have done it by now and got it out of his system already if that were something he liked.

The only galsses-free "3D" I know of is on the Gameboy handlheld ... and I'm not even sure that's proper 3D (I haven't tried one, but have a sneaky suspicion that it really uses two separate LCD screens to gave a pusedo-3D effect.

Cinemas and TV still rely on TV, although I did read recently about a new technique that may, eventually, mean an end to glasses for 3D TV. Of course, nobody actually makes programmes in 3D for TV broadcast which is why the whole 3D TV fad has been mostly a washout and why TV companies have started trying to make "smart" TVs as a new gimmick to get people buying them. Even Apple is rumoured to be releasing a smart TV either this year or next year.

That might be the same one I heard about. My boss was recently treated to a demo by someone in the US where he watched a completely 3D tv without glasses. He said the effect was jaw-dropping and completely blew his mind. I haven't heard anything since though so maybe it was cost prohibitive or tied up by patent or manufacturing issues?

2D suits me fine anyhow. ;)

From memory, the system I read about had issues where you had to sit / stand in "the right place" for the 3D effect to be viewed properly (elsewhere you got the usual 3D blurry effect you see without glasses), but they were working on making it viewable from wider angles ... a bit like the early days of LCD screens.

Yeah there was a no glasses 3D tv shown at CES this year - it works similar to a Nintendo 3DS in that you need to be in certain "spots" to get the full effect: http://www.trustedreviews.com/philips-6 ... _TV_review

I have also heard about the use of cameras in a tv to track viewers head position to adjust the 3D-ness.

There's a short article in today's NZ Herald (Thursday, 31 January) about JJ Abrams being brought in for the next Star Wars movie. There's also a brief paragraph in the TV Guide that went on sale today. I haven't read either of them properly yet, but from a very quick skim through I don't think they say anything new.

As someone who never cared for the EU, I'm kind of happy we'll see something new (and, hopefully, cinematic).

I think I can hear the EU fan outrage already.

That article is scaremongering a bit.

"I'm trying to start fresh" != "throwing [the EU] away"

Yup. As the article says a 'paraphrase'.
Looks like an EU hater reading between the lines to find something he likes the sound of, and that fits the tone of his site.
