Sure, as a purist, I'm not exactly what you'd call a fan of the EU; but, really, this just doesn't seem like the Wars to me. It feels more like, dare I say it, Star Trek.

Yeah, I tend to agree there. It's probably the reason why the NJO-era material is the stuff I find myself least drawn to.
On the other hand the Legacy series of novels really felt like a return to form for the franchise.
